UFC 98: Frankie “Answers” His Critics
by admin on May.25, 2009, under Uncategorized
Local Jersey boy Frankie “The Answer” Edgar of Toms River, forcefully shut the mouths of many critics on Saturday night, by defeating former lightweight champion Sean Sherk.
According to critics, Sean Sherk was supposed to be the physical embodiment of Frank’s weaknesses: a bigger, stronger and better wrestler, with faster hand speed, inhuman cardio, and an overwhelming amount of experience. Despite whether or not these assumptions about Sherk hold any weight, they weren’t enough to stop Edgar who bobbed, weaved, sprawled, and struck his way to a very one-sided decision victory.
This is Edgar’s biggest win to date, and does a lot of things for his credibility as a fighter. First of all, it puts him closer to a title shot which could certainly be in the near future (perhaps against the winner of B.J. Penn and Kenny Florian?). Secondly, he becomes one of only four fighters to ever beat Sherk, placing his name amongst the upper echelon of the sport (St. Pierre, Penn, and Hughes). Thirdly and possibly most important, it proves that he can hang in the 155 lb division. It was thought since his only loss to Gray Maynard at UFN 13 that perhaps Edgar (who generally walks around at 160 lbs) was too small for Lightweight. However with this win, Edgar not only stuffed most of Sherk’s take downs, but he also scored a take down of his own.
Despite his wrestling pedigree, it was Edgar’s boxing that frustrated and out-scored Sherk en route to a clear Unanimous Decision, and NJ MMA fans could not be prouder.
